| On consulting rates |
| Just talked with a fellow at xxx-xxx, which seems to be sort of a headhunter. They find candidates for Festanstellungen; and of course they also place consultants. We talked about rates and he said that the rates for senior people these days are 80-100 Euros/hr., occasionally you can get 110, but usually you are closer to 80, with the market showing some tendency toward improvement. And of course if you were a developer type with 2-3 years experience, then you would be hard pressed to get more than 50/hr. |
| well, i started off with 170 plus expenses and am now down to about 1000 / day all inclusive. but the former was xxx in Switzerland and the latter is, by now, really long term and high volume with just a nice ICE train ride to and from xxx. |
| the other day, one of these body shops wanted to give 87 / hr for Sweden, all inclusive (hotel, flights, everything!). i told him to forget it. i have been trying to brainwash these people into repeating to their customers, if you only offer peanuts, you will only get monkeys. i hope you join my initiative. of course, the day will come when i am so high and dry i will have to accept peanuts, but i am hoping by that time, rates will have gone up a bit again. |
| i have been dealing with body shops much more than any sane person should for the past nigh three years and my informed opinion is that they suck big green donkey dicks. to be fair, they are in an impossible situation; they don't understand their customers' needs, and they don't understand freelancers' capabilities, yet their only task in life is to bring the two together. it's pure consulting hell, as if xxx consisted of 100% overhead back in the day. and xxx xxx at least had an inkling of what it was he was selling. |
| As for job positions, 70-80,000 Euros would be a typical salary for a new position for a pretty experienced person. Companies may have people who are drawing higher salaries around, but they don't need to offer much more for new applicants. So the 90,000 Euro position described in your email is pretty decent. |
| i think swiss jobs have traditionally paid more. but on the whole, judging from my experience trying to get a permanent job back in the end of 2001, 70-80K is way off the map in Germany for the non-management, or at least partly hands-on position that would interest me (and you, i'm presuming). i got a single offer of 140k DMs, and that included virtual Ks of a company car. the few others i got were 120 or 130 -- xxx (xxx) offered even less. the only person who offered anything close to the xxx range was xxx; but that turned out to be just so much hot air, he didn't even manage to reimburse my bewerbungsreisekosten. |

| all in all i thank my lucky stars i was forced into selbstständigkeit, and have been so fortunate in the long run. in the past almost three years i averaged out even more than xxx pay, with more free time and without having to deal with xxx xxx, where initially it looked like i'd have to accept a serious cut in pay for the same work, and tendenziell more bureaucracy & travel. |
| the interesting thing here, which hadn't occurred to me before, is that both of your headhunter's estimations fit the headhunter agenda perfectly: since they add their cut on top of the freelance rates before passing the rate on to the customer, they have an interest in telling you these are low; conversely, i think they get a fixed cut of the per annum for a permanent job, so of course they want to push that upwards. |
