Watching the spin unfold in the Middelhoff ouster, how fine the line is between unmitigated sacking and self-propelled departure to even greater things. With every report i see or read, the general impression flipflops back and forth between the two, depending on non-surface attributes of what is reported, how, in which order, what words are used. Someone could write a thesis on this sequence.

Notion of compactness of a genome
space pictureIt also has a compact genome, with roughly the same number of genes as humans but only 10 per cent of the total number of "letters", or base pairs.

space pictureSo what is the most redundant creature alive? Is there a correlation between redundancy and some other surface trait?
space pictureI'd talked with Katja DeBra a while ago in the Voga about how one identifies a gene boundary in the long sequence of amino acids -- i think the answer was utilitarian: you look for places the enzymes lock onto; the other places are gene junk.
